The National Gallery welcomes 115,000 visitors a week. But, over recent years their audience has decreased by 30%. A changing audience calls for a change in the way National Gallery, and other art galleries alike, engages their audience. The younger crowd expect more social experiences. They are curious but lack the understanding of the background in art history to truly appreciate the art itself.
These wide expectations need to find a middle ground, to create a more meaningful and engaging gallery experience.
educART caters to this.

educART is a business proposal between National Gallery and Smartify to better engage young people (16-24 year olds) with the cultural sector. It was created during the National Gallery/Deloitte Hackathon. Smartify, is an existing app that users can use in the National Gallery or in 100 other galleries. When scanning an artwork, it tells you the art's history - in a chunk of text. educART aims to integrate AR into the Smartify App to better enhance the art viewing experience, which the youth can use as social currency.
The AR enhances the interpretation of the painting.
educART will work with universities and online communities to find up and coming artists. These new artists would create interpretations of the National Gallery artwork based on its history. Using AR, these interpretations are not only limited to drawings, they can be songs or dances.
It connects old artists with new artists. It builds an art foundation for a younger audience to better appreciate cultural history in a fun, engaging way. At the same time, it fosters interests in the modern art scene.
