hazen: habit tracker
rapid prototyping | arduino | research

Brief: Develop a design solution/outcome which assists how a human interacts with a product.
problem
There are many habit tracker apps on the market, however hazen differentiates itself in being a physical product.

Below shows Jimothy, hazen's mascot, trying to pick up mediation but struggling to do so.
solution
hazen , is a habit tracker that assists users with developing new positive behaviours in an era of productivity and self improvement.
research
hazen is based on the fundamentals of picking up a new positive behaviour. A new habit has to occur regularly and you need to be intrinsically motivated but it also has three key steps:

1. An environmental cue to start a chain reaction.
2. An action is prompted.
3. A small reward that can occur only after the action.
process
hazen is made possible through Arduino programming, a capacitive touch sensor and addressable LEDs. Conductive paint is used on the underside of the wood to make it a conductive surface. hazen is set so that one tap will only light up that particular day. If for example you miss day two, you cannot go back and light this up.

It is non-intrusive and unlike app reminders it gives the user the choice to keep up with the habit they are building. It gives better interaction between the user and a habit tracking product. The capactive touch adds a sense of wonder for the user as well since wood is not a common capactive surface in our everyday lives.
branding
Branding is a key part of this project as the market is saturated. Blue and purple is synonymous with mental health. As a differentiation, hazen has a mascot - Jimmy. This small, blue triangle makes hazen an approachable brand. The concentric half-circles in the hazen logo represents a cycle, that refers to a habit occurring regularly.
